Kenya-based ISP Wananchi unveils the country's triple-play service

Kenya-based internet service provider (ISP) Wanachi has unveiled what it says is the country's first ever triple-play broadband, television and telephony service under the Zuku brand. The ISP launched this service on October 7 over an optical fiber infrastructure under the Kenyan unified service plan. Wanachi, which previously used to focus on just corporate internet and dial-up services, said that it intends to spend more than $100 million to deploy its HFC network. The company also intends to re-launch its services under the broadband internet segment on a WiMAX network. Wanachi has already established nearly 20 WiMAX base stations in Mombasa and Nairobi and aims to deploy about 100 base stations by end-November. It plans to blanket 300,000 homes in these two cities. The ISP also plans to expand its triple-play access to Tanzania.
